What Happens When Google Opens Its Doors to Educators?


What happens when you bring the world’s most passionate educators together under one roof? Magic. I had an incredible opportunity to attend the Google for Education Champions Symposium, and I’ve captured the entire experience in my latest video.

This wasn’t just a typical professional development workshop. It was a three-day, high-intensity residency designed to bridge the gap between "using technology" and "leading innovation." As a Champion, the experience at the Google offices focuses on three critical pillars that every educator should have on their radar:

1. The Power of the Network

We often work in silos, but the Symposium is about reconnecting. Reuniting with fellow Innovators, Trainers, and Coaches reminds us that we are part of a global movement. These are the people solving the same problems you face, just in different time zones.

2. Mastering the Art of Advocacy

This was a major highlight. We went beyond the "how-to" of apps and dove deep into advocacy skills. From perfecting personal branding to mastering public speaking and leading complex change management, Google is investing in us as leaders, not just users. If you want to influence your district's future, these are the skills that move the needle.

3. Behind the "Google" Curtain

One of the most exciting perks? The sneak peeks. Operating under NDA, we got a first look at the product roadmap. This allows us to be prepared to amplify the right message at the right time, ensuring our communities are always ahead of the curve.

Virtual Museum Using Google Slides Presentation

Last week, my colleague, Javier Hernandez, presented a PD on virtual museums using Apple's Keynote. I thought this would be a great idea for our 5th graders who are currently studying the different cultures of the world. But instead of using Keynote, I thought it would be easier for the students and teachers to use Google Slides. Using office suite applications on your computer can be troublesome during the submission process (multiple emails, multiple versions, etc).  The following is the Virtual Museum template I created using Google Slides. The "Main Lobby" is where you can access the different rooms. Personal YouTube Video Collection with Google Drive!

I finished the Even More Google Geekiness: ISTE 2012 session with  Chris Fitzgerald Walsh 30 minutes. He mentioned how videos can be uploaded into and played with Google Drive. I just tried it and it is amazing! He was right, you have a personal and private YouTube channel for yourself. You can even share the video to others! Click here to see how I did it.

The Power of Passion & Inquiry In PBL Project-Based Learning

This year, the Grade 5 Learning Community embarked on Personalized Inquiry Projects (PIPs)—long-term, transdisciplinary experiences co-designed by students based on their own interests. From Passive to Active Traditional learning can often feel passive, short-term, and siloed. PIPs flip the script. They are active, open-ended, long-term, and deeply personalized.
