Maybe One Reason Why There Are Few Females in STEM

"66 percent of 4th grade girls say they like science and math. But only 18 percent of all college engineering majors are female."

Promoting Health in My Technology Classroom

I try to build protective factors (health-related skills) and developmental assets (building blocks of human development) for my students through my instruction, curriculum, and classroom management. In my curriculum, I have incorporated projects that focus on the importance of healthy family and peer relationships. In my instruction I have modeled online safety procedures that involve safe decision-making and refusal skills (ignoring online strangers or ignoring ads).  In my classroom, I also define  computer lab expectations  that promote appropriate behavior: C ome to class with clean hands. O perate only YOUR equipment properly. M onitors off! P ush your chair in when you are done. U se your inside voice. T ake care of your computer station and leave it the way you would like to find it. E at and drink outside the computer lab. R aise your hand if you need help. L isten to the teacher's directions carefully. A lways work toward your bes...

"Are today’s youth digital natives?" by Danah Boyd

Danah Boyd, a Principal Researcher at  Microsoft Research , talks about some myths related to the term,  Digital Native,  in her book,  It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens .  Here are  some interesting quotes found in  chapter 7, "Are today's youth digital natives?": "Because teens grew up in a world in which the internet has always existed,  many adults assume that youth automatically understand new technologies ." (pg. 176) "I interviewed teens who used programming scripts to build complex websites.  I also talked with teens who didn’t literacy know the difference between a web browser and the internet."  (pg. 176) "Teens may make their own media or share content online, but this  does not mean that they inherently have the knowledge or perspective to critically examine what they consume . (pg. 177) "Not only is it fraught, but it obscures the uneven distribution of technologi...

S.T.E.M. + Art/Design = S.T.E.A.M.

Image
The goal of  STEAM education  is to teach science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics to students by engaging them in rigorous real-world projects. Addition to STEM education , STEAM focuses on aesthetics and the creative process of solving problems.  Students can utilize the D esign Thinking  process to find resolutions to problems that involve any of these academic subjects.  STEAM education also requires students to learn in context, make connections between core subjects, and work with others to develop solutions. These projects develop students' 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.  Gaining interdisciplinary content knowledge and developing  21st century skills prepares our students for their future in higher education and the workplace.  Other Resources: Hilburn Academy STEAM Education ...

EdTech Training Center for Minecraft

Image
This video provides a tour of the EdTech Training Center. This training server is a safe and instructional environment where teachers, student-support specialists, and administrators can practice playing Minecraft. Members who join the server can train in exploration, gathering of resources, crafting, and the construction of structures. Players also learn how access server commands as server operators so that they can manage and control their own servers. BIE visited our school for a PBL workshop. We learned how to create a PBL unit that incorporated multiple subjects. The following information describes the unit we developed. General Info Name of Project: Chinese Paper-Cutting Subjects: Technology, Mandarin, Art Grade level: 2nd grade Driving Questions Overall DQ: How do we, as Chinese culture experts, convince 1st grade students to join the Chinese Paper-Cutting club? Technology DQ: How do we, as Chinese culture experts, use the similarities and differences of ancient Chinese paper-cutting to modern methods of paper-cutting. Project Idea Students will take on the role of Chinese culture experts, whose goal is to convince 1st grade students to join their Chinese Paper-Cutting club. They will be divided into groups based on their academic level or character traits. In Chinese class, students will need to research the history of the cultural tradition and the meaning behind the artistic expression. In technol...

Apps Status Dashboard For Google Apps Outages

Image
Google reported that there were  some issues with their Google Apps  services for a small population of their users on April 17th. I did not notice the outage at all, but I am sure that there were some teachers who were trying hysterically to access their online content. If this ever happens to you, don't flood your tech coordinator, edtech specialist, or IT team with phone calls about how you can't access your Google apps. First, simply go to  Apps Status Dashboard  to check whether or not it is an internal school issue or a disruption to all Google users.  The colored circles indicate when the disruptions happened (yellow: No Issues, orange: Service Disruption, red: Service Outage). You can also click on the circles to find out the full details.

'Google Keep': The Soon-To-Be Evernote Killer?

Image
Android Police's  Ron Amadeo  reported a new  Evernote -like service called Google Keep on March 17th. Sadly, he reported later in the day that the website was gone (www.drive.google.com/keep). It seems that Google is not ready to push out this service to the public, but it is great to know that  Google is working on a project that will allow you to clip web pages and take notes.  I have been hesitant in using Evernote or any other note-taking service because want to stay in Google's ecosystem for my work. When Keep comes out I will never have to!  Google Keep screenshots via  Android Police Through Android Police's screenshot, you can see the service looks very similar to  Google Notebook , which was shut down in  July 2012 .  The screenshot shows that your notes can be color-coded, archived, or deleted. You can also add an image to your notes, and view your notes in a list or as thumbnails. At the top, you can see Google's f...

Kid's Zero Footprint Calculator for Environmental Science Unit

Image
Have your students calculate their carbon footprint with  iEARN's    Zerofootprint Youth Calculator . The site asks students questions on their travel, diet, and home habits. It will also provide you with information on how to decrease your footprint, and provide you with a specific goal you can meet. This would be great tool to utilize in any environmental upper elementary science unit.  As you can see my carbon footprint is above the average person's footprint. I need to work on decreasing my footprint score.

Stevie Bathiche , the Director of Research in Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group, showed the Verge the projects they are working on to hopefully one day develop a holodeck (simulated reality facility).   Why would this be considered EdTech? Well, it seems that a holodeck classroom could be in our future (probably in the far future). A holodeck classroom full of students can interact with their simulated surroundings and teacher. Theoretically, students would be able to experience any type learning activity through this simulation.
