Design Thinking Tool for Test Phase - Feedback Capture Grid

Two years ago, I created a video about a project where 2nd grade students took on the role of IDEO Toy Lab inventors to design and build a toy for their kindergarten schoolmates. Our 2nd grade students used the Feedback Capture Grid during the testing phase to elicit feedback from their end users.

Parent & Child Mechanical Engineering Club

Gene MacLachlan and I created an after-school club for parents to join their children in learning how to program microcontrollers to create cool robots.
I would like to give a special thanks to the parents and students of this club, Danielle Rich for supporting us, and Gene MacLachlan for making this club a reality.

Disruptus: Practice Empathy and Ideation for Design Thinking

In this video I would like to share an awesome game called Disruptus that I learned about from my co-teacher, Heidi Peterson. It is a great game for students to practice the behaviors and thinking of the empathize and ideate phases of design thinking. The purpose of Disruptus is to have students brainstorm innovative ideas by looking at objects in different perspectives and thinking beyond the obvious. This game is a great way to help students learn and practice the following Ideate Principles: (1) one conversation at a time, (2) stay focused, (3) encourage wild ideas, (4) defer judgement, and (5) build on the ideas of others. It is also a great way for students to practice their empathy as well.

I've Been Writing a Book

In the beginning of the school year, Ulysses Press asked me to write a book on how to teach design thinking in education. This video is a vlog of an average weekend that I would spend writing my book. Hope you enjoy it!

PBL & STEM Project: Designing a Virtual Wildlife Sanctuary

Third graders used social science concepts and took on the role of lobbyists who sought to persuade members of the government to create policies that will protect a specific endangered species and fund the creation of a wildlife sanctuary for the species. They then designed a virtual wildlife sanctuary to help protect the animals and increase their population through selective breeding. They used the Scratch to code their virtual program.

Special thanks to Sarah Donaldson, Stacy Trinh, Sally Merriam, Jon Barry, Jeremy Jacobsen, Megan Godek, and Heidi Peterson.

Testing Kinder's Shelter Design

Last year the kindergarteners built an A-frame shelter in the forest for a forest kindergarten unit where we asked them the driving question: how would you survive being lost in the forest? This year the teachers decided to test out shelter that the kindergarteners designed and built.

Design Thinking - Improving School Experiences and Helping Teachers

This video showcases three projects during this year’s Design Thinking Club. Each group of students used the design thinking method to help improve a school experience or help a teacher in need. They performed empathy work and elicited feedback to produce a solution to their design challenge.

I would like to give a special thanks to the following people for making these projects possible. Students in the Design Thinking Club, Danielle Rich, Ryan Persaud, Leanne Norton, Tara Verenna, Christine Canales, and Chelsea Williams for making these projects possible.

Eco Trade Show 2018 - PBL Public Product

This year we had our third annual Eco Trade Show where students took on the role of inventors who had to design a solution to an environmental product. Their solutions came in the form of tangible products, strategic plans, campaigns and other methods of helping the environment. They were asked the following driving question: How will you as environmental engineers, design a solution that helps rehabilitate or preserve the environment?
