STEM Activity for 2nd Grade: Self Identity Box

Our 2nd graders built a foldable box that contained objects that represented who they were. This project incorporated social studies, engineering, science and mathematics.

In design class, Becca Goess and I helped students build and design their foldable boxes. We first had them learn about measurements to gain an understanding of the size and dimensions of their box.

How to Create a Professional Logo

This video was created for my 3rd grade class. After drawing their logo, they needed to take a picture of it and upload it to their Google Drive. Finally they used Google Drawing to create their logos.

Forest Kindergarten: Building A-Frame Shelters

In Forest Kindergarten, the classroom is the forest, and students get immersed in nature, developing a deeper connection to the natural world through exploration, inquiry-based learning, and authentic play. This form of education allows students to connect with the natural world, especially in a time when students rarely get to experience the outdoors, while learning about natural science, engineering design, and social science skills and concepts.

In my design class, Becca Goess and I wanted to see if students would be able to create a shelter in the forest. Since the students were going to be introduced to the unit a few weeks later, we decided to practice building A-Frame shelters in our class. First with popsicle sticks, and then with wooden rods. Students learned how to use rope and zip ties to connect rods together.

We then took the class to the forest to start exploring and building our A-Frame shelter!

STEM Activity for 1st Grade: Nature-Inspired Design

Hello everyone! Our STEM team and the 1st grade team collaborated on a transdisciplinary project that integrated science, engineering, writing, technology, and social studies.

In this project-based learning unit we provided the students the following driving question: How will you create a tool that is useful in a family activity?

Students used the design thinking process to design and engineer their family activity tool.

STEM Activity for 4th Grade: Designing Solutions to Geohazards

For our first unit, our 4th graders used the design thinking process to create solutions that reduce the impact of Earth processes;  Our students were placed into groups that focused on a particular geohazard: earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and landslides.
