What are the instructional goals of a Technology Instructor?

Technology instruction involves three major goals: (1) Developing student technology skills and knowledge, thereby allowing teachers to integrate technology tools into the core subjects curriculum, (2) Using technology to create a project-based learning environment, and (3) Developing the foundation of technology skills and knowledge for the 21st century workplace.

The most important role of a technology instructor is to prepare his or her students with the skills and knowledge needed to operate technology tools for learning objectives. Core subject teachers can freely incorporate technology into their lessons without the fear of spending time instructing their students on how to operate specific technology tools. Technology instructors need to prepare students with these skills so that other teachers can differentiate instruction, foster project-based learning, and encourage constructivist pedagogy through technology. The use of technology helps students to be active learners, allowing them to evaluate and analyze information, as well as create their own ideas.

Technology instructors must also create a project-based learning environment. This environment promotes student-centered learning activities that integrate authentic, real world issues. Additionally, these specialized instructors are free to create activities that foster interdisciplinary learning through the use of technology. When utilized correctly, technology can provide students with the opportunity to collaborate, think critically, solve problems, and actively participate in their own learning.

Technology instructors have a critical role in developing curriculum that prepares their students for the future. They teach 21st century skills and knowledge through the use of technology to ensure successful transitions into the 21st century workforce. According to Partnership for 21st Century (P21), an organization comprised of education leaders, policymakers, and leading businesses, an essential 21st Century Student Outcome is information, media, and technology skills. Gaining these skills through technology instruction and curriculum will help improve students’ critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration; skills essential for success in the 21st century workplace.
